Summer in December? It’s easy to forget that for those of us living in the Southern Hemisphere, summer is here!
As a primary school teacher here in Chile I am lucky to be treated to nine weeks of summer holiday. Which is a crazy long time! As I write this, I have two weeks left at school and then I am off until the end of February.
So, Summer is a great time for planning adventures, both locally and afar too. Here is how my plans are shaping up so far for this summer:
Christmas :: 24,25 Dec.
I will be spending Christmas with Carlos’ family who live just outside of Santiago. We will spend Christmas in the least Christmassy way for me: by the pool with a BBQ. I don’t know that a Summer Christmas will ever really feel like Christmas for me, but I do know that it’s still lots of fun!!
Anniversary:: 26 Dec.
The 26th December marks our one year wedding anniversary which means we will celebrate with our favourite food, Indian.
London :: 27 Dec – 14 Jan.
I’m really lucky to be heading home to London again. This time I am going for two-and-a-half weeks and I can’t wait to catch up with family and friends as well as soaking up that real wintery Christmas feeling.
Coyhaique and Carretera Austral :: 1-15 Feb
Carlos and I are heading to the south of Chile (Patagonia) for our summer holiday this year. We are going to be spending 15 days adventuring around Coyhaique and The Carratera Austral, an area that is known for its stunning natural beauty. We aren’t going to plan much, as our travelling style is very much a ‘go with the flow one’, but we are planning to combine a mix of camping, cabins and B&Bs. So excited to explore a new area of Chile.
And now, plans that aren’t set, but that I’d like to happen:
I haven’t been to my favourite city, Valpo, since April! So I am well overdue a trip to the most colourful city, especially as it is oh so close to Santiago!
Summer isn’t complete without a few days at the beach and since Santiago is so close to the beach, I am sure that I’ll head to the beach for a few days with some of my friends from work.
There are a few beaaaaautiful spots close to Santiago that I would like to explore this summer!

So much fun in your future. Gotta love those teacher perks like summer holidays!
Thank you, I’m excited 🙂 And yay for teacher holidays! We get six weeks for summer in England so nine seems like ages to me!!
Such exciting plans! Patagonia sounds sooo exciting and as always, London will be amazing. Is Carlos going with you? (And I’m glad you were well enough to write this post!) xx
Thanks!! I’m going to London alone as Carlos doesn’t get much holiday, we would rather save our holiday together to go somewhere new, like the north of Patagonia 🙂
Can’t wait to hear about your summer holiday in Chile! Those pictures make it look like you’re heading to the Norway of Chile 😉
Thanks! I’m excited as its a naturally stunning area! 😀
So many cool plans! So jealous of how long the vacations are. In Mexico we usually get 4 weeks, but here in Slovenia we barely get one, so bizarre given how festive people get but any way. Enjoy your travels!! Glad to see you are feeling better! xx
I am lucky and defo not the norm: Chilean holidays are usually 15 days per year. And you don’t get any holiday for your first year in a new job! Us teachers are beyond lucky!!
Sounds like you have a wonderful summer ahead of you! Look forward to seeing what you share in the New Year! Have a wonderful, warm & sunny Christmas and a Happy New Year in case I miss next week! #WanderfulWednesday
Thanks so much! Wishing you all the best for a wonderful end to 2016 and an even better start to 2017. Thanks for all of the Wanderful Wednesday support!
Sounds like some fun plans. I’ll admit, it threw me for a loop that the title was talking about summer. I thought that you were just planning really far in advance. But after reading, it makes sense. It’s hard for me to think about summer when there’s snow on the ground and the temperature is in the teens. #wanderfulwednesday
It’s so weird for me too!! I think it’ll take a very long time to adjust to the opposite seasons!
Nine weeks! Holy moly! So much time for so much fun stuff 🙂 I’m extremely jealous of your Patagonia plans, I’ve wanted to go there for the longest time. It sounds like you’ll have a blast, and going with the flow sounds like something I’d like to do but I’m too much of a planning freak 😦 Anyway I can’t wait to read all about it.
If you get a small gap in your schedule when you come to London perhaps we could meet for coffee? No pressure as I’m sure you’ve got a long list of people to see. Is Carlos coming? If so perhaps he and S could have a mini reunion…
I knowww, nine weeks is crazy!! Haha, the thought of planning out every part of my holiday is a nightmare for me. So glad we are all different 😉
Would love to meet up, let’s be in touch to see if we can manage it! It’ll just be me though as Carlos isn’t on holiday during that time 😀
All of your plans sound like so much fun, but kind of a bummer that you won’t get to experience a London winter until after Christmas. Either way I know that you’ll be excited to go home for a little while, and all of your other plans in South America sound like so much fun!
Thank you!! I will still get to have some Christmas with my family as we are going to do a post Christmas dinner 🙂 So I get two Christmases, yay!
What a great bunch of plans!! Can’t wait to read more about the new area of Chile when you are back 😀 Have fun!!
Thank youuuu!! So excited to explore it too!
Oh man, crazy to think that it’s summer in December where you are. However, its super amazing that you get so much time off for the summer holiday. Sounds like these next couple of weeks are going to be great. Christmas, Wedding Anniversary, then London! Enjoy these moments Marcella! 🙂
Crazy indeed!! Thanks so much 🙂 Sp excited for everything to come!
Sounds like a great summer plan! Congratulations on your anniverary too – my husband and I will celebrate 1 year on January 7th. Lots of exciting plans ahead! We’ll be back in NZ over Christmas then back to Fiji then to Japan for a ski holiday – so the next couple of months will be very busy! We have a summer Christmas too so it will be a big shock to the system when we arrive in a wintery Japan – but can’t wait!
Thank you!! Happy Anniversary to you both too. Your plans sound like so much fun 🙂
Wow! Those are some really exciting times. We have a shutdown the last week of the year, so, I am taking advantage of that. My last day of work will be Dec 15. I am going to New York and Philadelphia and hope to cram a little end of year mini trip. Have a fun time! #wanderfulwednesday
That’s so fun, your plans sound great! I’m looking forward to reading all about them 🙂
Ooo looks like you are having wonderful plans for the vacation period. The photos you shared look amazing, and I’m sure you’ll come back with even more stunning visuals. I also wanted to thank you all ladies for a wonderful link-up, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! xoxo, nano | http://www.travelwithnanob.com
Thanks so much, Nano! So glad you have joined us on the linkup, thanks for all of the support! 🙂
Have a wonderful Anniversary, Marcella!
Thanks so much!! 😀
9 weeks? That is crazy, but boy oh boy what a time you can have … and what a time you have planned! I love your trips away, you are covering all bases although it will be a shock going from Southern Hemisphere Summer to brrrrr Northern Hemisphere London winter. I hope you have a truly fabulous Christmas and will catch up with stories from your travels in the New Year! #WanderfulWednesday
I knowww, I’ll be going from over 30 degrees to single digits, it’ll be a shock!
Have a lovely, lovely festive season 🙂
Wow!! You are going to cover a lot of ground soon!! I think I’d like to spend a Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere at least once…. Europe is FREEZING right now!! 😉
It is fun! I mean you can’t complain about spending Christmas Day in the pool 😀
I’ll be sitting in bed, bundled up as I live vicariously through your summer holidays!! 9 weeks sounds AMAZING… maybe I need to consider a change in career? Haha. Dearly missing the weather in Chile xo
Aww, I bet! And it’s only been getting hotter! Thanks, I’m excited for my holiday to start on Wednesday 🙂
Great plans! I wish you a great summer (and two and a half weeks of winter :))! Merry Christmas!xx
Happy Christmas to you too! Enjoy xx
WOW that is such a good amount of holiday! Nicely played 🙂 Sounds like you’ve got some great plans for it too, especially exploring Chile. And hope you have a wonderful time in London first!
Thank you! So excited 🙂 Maybe we can meet up this time? Have a wonderful rest of the festive season!
