Island Life, Colombia | Honeymoon

When I think of a honeymoon, I often get images of palmtrees, clear water and white beach sands.  We spent 6 days of our honeymoon in the city of Cartagena de Indias, and the rest on a honeymoon like isalnd!

Isla Tierra Bomba is a quick ten-minute boat ride from Cartagena de Indias and is one of the lesser visited islands.  It only has a few hotels – we onlñy saw two others, and our hotel was right at the end of the beach with nobody to be seen anywhere close!  On the other side of the clear water, you can see the city of Cartagena de Indias.

The island feels like being in the Caribbean, well it is in the Caribbean sea after all.  It felt laid back, friendly and was very, very hot!DSC04936DSC04789 DSC04790 DSC04794 DSC04795 DSC04796 DSC04798DSC04809But not being content with just sitting, as neither of us are huge fans of just sitting on the beach, we set off to explore the island on foot.  We passed beach upon beach of inviting looking sand, more palmtrees than I´ve ever seen, and small houses.DSC04914DSC04802 DSC04805 DSC04810 DSC04811 DSC04812 DSC04816 DSC04818 DSC04822DSC04936Our favourite part was where we reached after an hours walk.  We found a beach with nobody swimming, nobody sunbathing.  Only local people who were going about their daily lives.  We saught shade under a palm tree and just watched.

We saw two boys excitedly fishing with a net, they didn´t catch anything, but that didn´t stop them from laughing the whole time.  We saw another family seeking shade under a tree, and we saw a man loading up donkeys with goods to be carried.  I wonder if they saw the beauty of the place, or if it just became normal because they saw these views everyday?DSC04831 DSC04834 DSC04835 DSC04845 DSC04846 DSC04847DSC04921And by night, the view was beautiful!  Pitch black with the twinkling lights of the city in the background – beautiful!DSC04877 DSC04886

Have you visited a quiet island before?

Have a great weekend, everyone!

  1. What a gorgeous island, those white sandy beaches and blue waters took my breath away! I truthfully have not heard anything about it until reading your post. Seems to be an ideal secluded spot for a romantic and peaceful getaway. Thanks for sharing it with the world! We spent our honeymoon in Maui, which was not as quiet as yours. The most isolated yet incredibly beautiful one I have seen was in Haiti (of all the places) – Île-à-Vache. 🙂

  2. Wow – that looks like heaven! 🙂 Such beautiful photos! I recommend Little Corn of the corn islands in Nicuragua for a quiet island too – I walked for about 40 minutes away from the village there and had a whole caribbean paradise beach to myself for the day.

  3. What a beautiful place to spend your honeymoon. I haven’t done a proper beach holiday in years, because I’m like you – I always want to be exploring. So this gives me hope that maybe I might enjoy a honeymoon island like experience one day! I really like the view out over the water with the city in the background. That’s so unique and must have been cool to watch it changing through day to night.

  4. Yes that place is exactly what I think of when I think of a Honeymoon! Colombia looks incredibly gorgeous and I’m glad you got to explore the island on foot. Thanks for sharing!

  5. This is really beautiful. Looks like the perfect place to unplug and get in some serious rest and relaxation. Oh the joys of sand between the toes (is it summer, yet?)

  6. I can’t believe this is Columbia! The water looks so blue and the sand so white. I love that it wasn’t touristy at all, and you got to feel like that you discovered a secret place that only you and the locals know about. This is exactly what I imagine when you say honeymoon. 🙂

  7. Looks like a lovely place for a honeymoon!! So beautiful! I love the pictures of the city skyline in the background! I’m trying to think if I’ve even been to a “quiet” island … I guess maybe when I was little. Most of the Islands I’ve been to recently have been touristy and extremely crowded. Kind of takes away from the relaxed island vibe! 😀

  8. This looks like a beautiful place to spend your honeymoon, and an amazing place to explore. I love how y’all walked so far that you stumbled upon people doing everyday life things. That must have been great for people-watching. 🙂
