The Faces of Moving Abroad

I can’t count how many times over the past few weeks people have asked me how I feel about moving to Chile.  I usually reply with a face like this…

Bodh Gaya, India

Bodh Gaya, India

and mumble something about how I am a mix of every emotion at the moment, and also the fact that I still don’t feel like I am leaving!  So, I thought It’d be fun to put together a post describing my feelings, through photos taken around the world.

A few times people have wished my Happy Travels as they maybe think I will be spending the next few years at the beach or up a mountain, something like this…

St. Ives, Cornwall, England

Santiago, Chile

Santiago, Chile

But anyway, before I even get there.  It’s time to start packing, which I have started already but it feels something like this…

Valle de Elqui, Chile

Then, it’s time to leave London and say goodbye to my family at the airport, but not for long as they will arrive seven weeks later for three weeks in Chile to celebrate our wedding.  So, time to prepare for the crazily long journey across the ocean to Chile, where I wish I would be smiling like this…

Santiago, Chile

But actually, I feel more like this…

Varanasi, India

Varanasi, India

I’ll smile from ear-to-ear as I see the beautiful mountains from the plane window, like this…DSC_0077

Then when I arrive I’ll step off the plane into spring, where Chileans will be saying it’s cold and will be dressed like this…DSC03163

However, for me, Chilean spring feels like English summer so I will be dressed like this…

Kew Gardens, London

Then, time to catch up on sleep and wake up feeling refreshed like this…

Bolivian desert

Before adopting the nod and smile routine as I transition back into Spanish everything, so my face will look something like this…

This is when the mountains of food will begin as a welcome party from Carlos’ family and I will eat everything, and resemble something like this…

Siem Reap, Cambodia

So, that’s kind of how I am feeling!  😉 Can you relate to any of these?

  1. I LOVED this post Marcella!! It is just so cute and I smiled through the whole thing! The difference in dressing and weather perceptions was so funny. I know I already said this, but I wish you the best of luck on your move!! That is so cool that your family will be flying down there soon 🙂

    • Thanks so much, Anna!! Haha – Carlos’ family always used to ask me if I was cold because I was wearing a tshirt while they were all in jumpers but for me, it felt like the hottest days we get in the UK!! I’m so excited for my family, and 6 of my friends to come for our wedding, it makes leaving easier as I know I’ll see them really soon 🙂

  2. That is exactly my face when I am in Slovenia and everything is in Slovenian. Wish you the best of luck!!! I’m so excited!! Can’t wait for more updates 🙂

  3. I love this post, it’s so original. Packing is such a chore for me, no matter how early I try to finish the task I always end up packing until the last moment. You get two summers this year, how lucky 🙂

  4. What a perfect post! I am so excited that I get to follow along with your journey to Chile. You’re living one of my dreams for sure! I would make many of these faces. In fact, I have a moving picture of me with a giant uhaul box on my head. That’s exactly how moving makes me feel. Ha!

  5. ha! This post reminds me very much of when I moved from California to Singapore, also to get married and live. Congratulations and best of luck with everything! I also lol’d at the part about the weather. 🙂

  6. I can definitely relate to this post. 🙂 I think most of us who once moved abroad went through similar phases. 🙂 Good luck on your new adventure! I don’t doubt it will be amazing! 🙂

  7. You nailed it! I am also one of the many who moved abroad to get married. I can relate to all of it, especially the part about Chileans and the weather. Brazilians from Rio or Vitoria are exactly the same. I’ll be walking out the door in shorts, look around and think “Why is everyone wearing scarves and hats? Oh, it’s cloudy.” Good luck with the move! #MondayEscapes

  8. A great idea for a post. I do hope your move to Chile and wedding go well. Chile looks like a beautiful country and is yet another place on my ‘to visit when I’ve got lots of money’ list! #mondayescapes

  9. Haha, I love that! People always have the strangest ideas about what living abroad is like 😀 but Chile really sounds fabulous and I bet you’ll have an awesome time there! Not wishing you happy travels but good luck and a safe journey instead 🙂

  10. The packing must be daunting. But if you forget something or you decide that you should have brought something different your family will be there soon to bring it to you. I hope the move goes well for you!

  11. Oh brilliant post. I love how you’ve managed to find so many photos that convey your feelings! Good luck with the packing and the moving and the WEDDING! Wow, what a new adventure for you – can’t wait to follow it. Thanks for linking up with #MondayEscapes

  12. Love this!! Smiled through all of it! Can relate to many of these faces! Especially the packing one … Oh how packing gives me anxiety! Oh and can’t forget the nod and smile approach to Spanish … I like to also add the “Si.. Si … Si …. ” 😀
