A London Childhood Memory :: Columbia Road Flower Market

I remember going to the flower market on Columbia Road several times as a child.  We would go early, as it was only open early back then, and after my parents had bought some plants for the garden, we would have a tortilla from a Spanish café on the road.

Now, Columbia Road Flower Market, East London, heaves with people every Sunday.  It’s open longer hours and is famous for it’s Instagram worthy flowers.  I hadn’t been since I was a child, so this Sunday my parents and I headed there for a trip down memory lane.  We arrived around 11am, and it was choc-a-block with people buying everything from colourful bouquets to plantable flowers, to bulbs to huuuge plants!  We did find a Spanish café, but weren’t sure if it was the same one from all those years ago.  It’s a great place to visit on a sunny day, and there are lots of nice places to have a bite to eat afterwards.  And of course, if you are going to the market, you have to buy some of the amazing flowers!

Which places bring back childhood memories for you?

  1. Such pretty photos! Really is getting me in the mood for choosing wedding flowers. I’m not too picky: as long as they’re colorful and pretty, it sounds good to me!

  2. Gorgeous! Ive always wanted to go – all these beautiful blooms make me miss spring here in Australia right now. What I wouldn’t do for a bouquet of peonies…or sunflowers…or tulips. Any will do! 🙂

  3. Awe thanks for the shout-out 🙂 Those flowers! Swoon. I wish we had a flower market here! My husband and I kinda talked about making it back to London, possibly this summer (we’ll see) but I’m adding this to things to see/do if/when we go back! And maybe we can meet up as well 🙂

  4. I love that you went back with your parents for a visit. Those flowers are beautiful, I love all the pictures! 🙂

    • That makes two of us, I only know the names of the more common flowers! The Spanish cafe was crazily busy so we went somewhere else, it looked totally different from all of those years ago, it must have been around 15yrs!

  5. Gorgeous flowers! I love a nice bouquet – we’ve been buying one bouquet of flowers every month to light up our kitchen table 🙂 What a cool memory to have as a child 🙂
