Vilches :: Chile

As I mentioned here, I am off to Chile in three weeks for a four week trip away so before then I will be posting about some of the Chilean adventures I went on while living in Chile for ten months in 2010-2011, and also some from the time I travelled in Chile as part of my five month trip in South America in 2010.

This adventure took place in January 2010 during the height of the Chilean summer.  Carlos and I spent six days camping in three different places in middle Chile.  The first place we went to was just outside of Altos del Lircay National Reserve in Vilches, five hours drive south from Santiago.

We drove to Vilches.  Well, when I saw we what I really mean is that Carlos drove while I sat in the passenger seat feeling like I was melting from the heat. Anyway, when we arrived we set up our tent under the trees, spotted a lizard and cooked some dinner on the portable stove.  Then it was off to bed ready for the next day.

I remember being woken up by the sun streaming in through the tent and the feeling of how hot it was.  I knew I needed to apply a lot of suncream!

We set off with our walking boots on and found beautiful flowers, the greenest trees and a small area of water for a cool off.  I remember there were a group of three children playing in the water and they asked Carlos which language we were speaking in, as we were speaking English at the time.  They then proceeded to ask me, in Spanish, lots of curious questions about why I was in Chile.  Then they carried on jumping into the clear water.

Stay tuned for the next part of the middle Chile camping trip, coming next week!
