Arica, an Oasis in the Middle of the Desert {Guest Post}

Today we are excited to welcome Pepe to our blog to tell us all about his home city; Arica, Chile.

Arica is a small city in the extreme north of Chile, inserted in the middle of the desert between the sea and two valleys, a true oasis.

The city’s cathedral was built by Eiffel (yeah, the guy who built the Eiffel Tower)

Arica has a comfortable climate (costal desert), in fact it is called “the city of eternal spring”, given its pleasant temperatures.  At the moment, during winter, the rest of Chile is cold and rainy.  However, Arica maintains its warmth (between 13 and 20º C) and it seriously never rains.  Meanwhile, in summer the temperature doesn’t rise above 28ºC, which makes it a nice city all year round.

The proximity of Arica with Peru and Bolivia means that these countries have an influence in all areas of life, with dance and food being the most prominent. It also has the largest population of people of African descent in Chile.

Bolivian food, called “Guatia.”  Chicken, potatoes, squash, onions, bell pepper and chilli, which is made under the floor with hot stones.

“Comida Chileno-Peruano” (Chilean-Peruvian food): corn on the BBQ + cheese and “sopaipilla nortina” (a dough made from corn).

A normal day in Arica can be made up of buying different fruits from the valleys or neighbouring countries, cycling, swimming in the various beaches, surfing, leisurely walking through the centre and most of all enjoying the benefits of multicultural people, the relaxation and climate.

Arica, un oasis en medio del Desierto

Arica es una ciudad pequeña en el extremo norte de Chile, inserta en el medio del desierto entre el mar y dos valles, esto convierte a la ciudad un verdadero oasis.

Arica posee un clima privilegiado (desértico costero), de hecho es llamada “la ciudad de la eterna primavera”, dado a sus agradables temperaturas, por ejemplo ahora en invierno, mientras en el resto de Chile está frío y lluvioso, Arica se mantiene cálido (entre 13 y 20º C) y no llueve nunca, en serio. A su vez, en verano las temperaturas no superan los 28ºC, lo cual la hace una ciudad agradable todo el año.

La cercanía de Arica con Perú y Bolivia hace que posea una influencia de estos países en todos los ámbitos, siendo principalmente los bailes y la comida los que más destacan. También tiene la población afrodescendiente más grande de Chile.

Un día normal en Arica puede ser comprar los frutos excéntricos provenientes de sus valles o países vecinos, andar en bicicleta, bañarse en sus distintas playas, practicar surf, caminar con calma por el centro y más que nada disfrutar de las bondades de la gente multicultural, el relajo y el clima.
